ContentsLincoln Silver Dollar |
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, is one of the most celebrated figures in American history. To honor Lincoln's life and commemorate the 200th anniversary of his birth, Lincoln Silver Dollars were issued by the U.S. Mint in collector proof and uncirculated conditions.
Authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 (Public Law 109-145), the $1 coins are struck from 90% silver, with the remaining balance copper. The commemorates went on sale Feb. 12, 2009, which was the bicentennial birthday of Lincoln.
They were an immediate hit with coin collectors. The U.S. Mint sold 450,000 in a bit over a month's time, reaching a sellout status.

Designers & Sculptors
Obverse design: The obverse features a portrait of Lincoln that symbolizes his strength and resolve. The image was inspired by Daniel Chester French's famous sculpture of the President that sits inside the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. It was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Justin Kunz and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart.
Reverse design: The reverse features an outer laurel wreath and within the last 43 words of the Gettysburg Address:
WE HERE HIGHLY RESOLVE THAT THESE DEAD SHALL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN - THAT THIS NATION, UNDER GOD, SHALL HAVE A NEW BIRTH OF FREEDOM - AND THAT GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, SHALL NOT PERISH FROM THE EARTH.
It was designed and executed by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.
