Ten 2009-dated coins have been honored with Coin of the Year Awards for 2011 by World Coin News magazine and its partner website, NumisMaster.com. Sales of gold coins have soared by 400% so far this year compared with 2009, according to the Royal Mint. With the price of gold hitting record levels, the Mint says commemorative coins are in strong demand. Sales of silver coins have also risen, though by a comparatively modest 20%. The United States Gold Bureau is marking last-month's 185th birthday of four-term South African president Paul Kruger by offering 1-ounce Gold Krugerrand Coins for only 3% over the spot price of gold.
