The U.S. Mint was less active in September, producing fewer circulating coins for a third straight month as levels fell toward those from May, according to the latest data. The pace was off 7.2 percent from August and down 24.9 percent from June — the busiest month in 2010 when the United States Mint had capped a string of four consecutive monthly increases. Antique American coin haul found in Hackney back garden, hackneygazette.co.uk
A treasure trove of antique gold coins has been dug up in a Hackney back garden. The stash of 80 gold $20 coins was found by two residents of the property in Stamford Hill who decided to do a bit of gardening with friends. After breaking through the earth, the friends stumbled across the coins, ranging in date from 1854 to 1913, and then took them to the Portable Antiquities Scheme. A hoard of more than 52,500 Roman coins found in a field in Somerset has been valued at £320,250. The coins were discovered in April by Dave Crisp, from Wiltshire, who will share the sum with the landowner. Mr Crisp, said: "I'm very, very happy with that. I think it's a fair valuation." Somerset County Council hopes to buy the hoard, one of the largest finds of Roman coins in Britain, for display at the Museum of Somerset. What a builder thought was a quarter has turned out to be a 2,000-year-old shekel, the kind of coin Judas was paid to betray Jesus. The coin was found during the reconstruction of a Manchester wharf in the spring of 2006, and now the finder and property owner are trying to solve the mystery of how it got there. Only 114 of a total of 160 gold and silver coins which the President of the National Bank of Poland Slawomir Skrzypek took to Katyn have been recovered after the Smolensk crash. The National Bank of Poland (NBP) issued the coins to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre.
