Expectations are high for the possible proof gold American Eagles this year, and the new uncirculated Mint Sets launched with decent but slow sales numbers. Plus, a new quarter is coming soon. 2010 Proof Gold Eagle Production Likely?, CoinNews.net
A House of Representatives subcommittee hearing on Tuesday revealed better odds in minting proof and uncirculated 2010 American Silver Eagle coins. But what about 2010 proof American Gold Eagles? As a reminder, the 2009 versions of these numismatic coins were canceled as the United States Mint focused its resources and available coin blank or planchet supplies on producing bullion coins. During the hearing, U.S. Mint Director Ed Moy spoke of his support for legislation that would redirect a portion of silver planchet from legally ... Click for coin article
2010 mint set starts out slow, NumismaticNews.net
The 2010 uncirculated coin set hits the page with sales of just over 200,000 as the 2009 set leaves with sales of just under 775,000. That means that already a quarter of the number of uncirculated sets sold last year have been sold in just a few days. However, last year's set started out in the first few days with sales double that number. That might be ominous, but the 2009 set didn't go on sale until October, and collectors might have been a little anxious last year that they were not getting the sets in the usual July period because of technical ... Coin Rarities & Related Topics: Collections of Claude Davis and Brandon Smith, Coin Pricing and Government Regulation, CoinLink.com
After writing about two collections in the Boston ANA auction to be held in August, I will address the topic of 'overpricing.' A vocal U.S. Congressman has called for government regulation of rare coin and bullion businesses. He has attacked one prominent seller of bullion and modern coins as having overpriced some of their coins and he seems to imply that the Federal Government should combat overpricing, presumably with price controls. In my view, while such overpricing of bullion coins and of other common coins occurs, his approach is flawed ... Click for coin article
Gold Coin Sellers Angered by New Tax Law, ABCNews.go.com
Those already outraged by the president's health care legislation now have a new bone of contention -- a scarcely noticed tack-on provision to the law that puts gold coin buyers and sellers under closer government scrutiny. The issue is rising to the fore just as gold coin dealers are attracting attention over sales tactics. Section 9006 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will amend the Internal Revenue Code to expand the scope of Form 1099. Currently, 1099 forms are used to track and report the miscellaneous income ... Click for coin article
New Orleans Gold $10 Began Slowly, NumisMaster.com
If you are looking for some true hidden values, the place to look might well be the Coronet Head $10 gold pieces from New Orleans. Gold eagles from anywhere tend to be overlooked, but somehow those from New Orleans seem to have a special place in obscurity. It's probably a result of gold eagles not getting quite the same attention as some other gold denominations, such as double eagles, but it almost certainly has to do at least in part with New Orleans itself as the facility despite some awfully tough coins like the 1854-O and 1856-O ... What Makes Certain Coins Popular–and Others Unpopular?, RareGoldCoins.com
I often make buying decisions based on a coin's popularity. As an example, I will buy a coin like an 1839-O quarter eagle for stock because it is popular and I know it will sell. But I might pass on a rarer coin like an 1862-S quarter eagle because it is not a popular issue and it will be a harder coin to sell. This got me to to thinking: what makes one coin popular and another unpopular? Certain 20th century series are popular with collectors because of a strong nostalgia factor ... Click for coin article
Yorba Linda man's lost coin leads to priceless find, OCRegister.com
It's been about three weeks since Norman Beck lost the 1922 silver dollar that he carried in his pocket for 60 years, and the 83-year-old has just about given up hope that it will be returned. Yet the Yorba Linda resident found something unexpected during his search for the well-worn coin that served as his good luck charm for so many years: An outpouring of kindness from strangers. There was the Santa Ana resident who called to offer an 1881 silver dollar. A man who had inherited a lucky 1922 silver dollar from a relative, wanted to pass along ... Click for coin article
