2009 Jefferson Nickels and Roosevelt Dimes Values, CoinNews.net
Looking back to last year, 2009 was filled with a roller-coaster of events relating to the coin collecting world. Among the many highlights, new coin releases such as the Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar and the four redesigned 2009 Lincoln Cents are sure to be recalled by anyone even slightly familiar with the hobby. The sharp US Mint June coin production increases may further jog the memory, reminding collectors of the historically low mintage levels in 2009. For the entire year, just 3,548,000,000 circulating coins were ... Click for coin article
Tales of Beaver Money, the Oregon Territory's gold coins, Statesmanjournal.com
When the Oregon Territory was established in 1848, the scarcity of printed money and coinage was a serious problem. Trying to get U.S. currency was extremely difficult. When Joseph Lane, the first territorial governor, arrived in Oregon he found some local settlers using Peruvian money as a form of currency, though it was only worth 50 cents on the dollar at the Hudson's Bay Company stores. In addition to bartering, other mediums of exchange included wheat, beaver pelts, otter pelts, trade blankets, drafts and orders, and Mexican pesos ... Click for coin article

Coin Profile: The Mystery of the Proof 1875 Gold Dollar, CoinLink.com
As I have mentioned before, certified population figures can be helpful but they can also be confusing. Take, for instance, the 1875 gold dollar in Proof. This is a coin with a reported original mintage of 20. But it has a combined PCGS/NGC population of 24 (twelve at each service). Something is obviously not right here. But, for once, the fault does not lie with the population reports. Despite being created with the best of intentions, the PCGS and NGC population figures are full of inaccurate information which can be misleading to ... Click for coin article

Half dimes started with 'half disme', NumismaticNews.net
The list of most historic coins of the United States is one where many can disagree. That is especially true in the case of the 1792 half disme, but as with all other early half dimes, the 1792 is certainly an interesting item. For those with a love of history and an interest in the early workings of the U.S. Mint it is hard to do better than a collection of the early half dimes as they all tell a story and usually a very interesting one. The early half dime story started in April of 1792. It was at that time that lawmakers reached a decision on the coins of the ... Click for coin article
Sleepy summertime?, CoinValuesOnline.com
July is traditionally a sleepy month for the coin market, as dealers enjoy a week or two of summer vacation before the juggernaut that is the American Numismatic Association summer convention, set this year Aug. 10 to 14 in Boston. When counting the pre-show and associated auctions, the ANA World's Fair of Money provides more than a week of intense activity for the market. The introduction of the summer Florida United Numismatists show – this year July 8 to 11 in Orlando – has cut into the traditional July lull, and the raging ... Click for coin article
