Welcome back to Something About Coins! The first few coin articles focus on the U.S. Mint, while the others cover upcoming coin auctions, coin shows and special exhibits, and that lawsuit against coin doctors. The last article takes a look at detecting counterfeit coins.
US Mint 2010 Product Schedule Changes, Proof Gold and Silver Eagles TBD, CoinNews.net
The United States Mint on Tuesday published a new 2010 product schedule that offers collectors a full preview of its remaining releases with specific projected dates. Up until this point, the U.S. Mint had been providing release dates for two months into the future and then general monthly time lines for other coin issues. Still notably absent from the schedule are exact dates for the uncirculated and proof 2010 American Gold and Silver Eagles, providing a reminder that they may be canceled for a second year. The 2010 bullion versions ... Click for coin article

Coin Monday: 1922 -- Into the Downtime, HeritageAuctions.blogspot.com
Downtime is just a dream for me right now; the cataloging staff spent the weekend working on the upcoming Boston ANA Auction, and it looks like two more working weekends are on the way. As appealing as the thought of downtime might be, though, there's always the potential for too much of a good thing. In 1922, the U.S. Mint saw plenty of downtime, and as a result, only a few types of coins were struck that year. In the wake of World War I, the United States went through a recession that lasted about half a year. The start of 1920 ... Click for coin article

A trail of historic and rare coins led Springfield police to two accused burglars. Police said the men broke into the Ohio coin on East Main street in Springfield, on Sunday night. All officers had to do was follow the trail of coins, right to the suspect's pick-up truck. The truck took off as police got there, but they were able to nab the suspects after a traffic stop. Police reports stated, they found more coins in the truck bed and inside the suspects pockets.

Counterfeit Detection: The Kissing Thief, NGCcoin.com
This proof 1878 Shield Nickel looks pretty at first glance, but a more careful evaluation reveals that it's a fake. The old saying, "When a thief kisses you, count your teeth," can be applied to the world of business in many useful ways. And when it comes to counterfeit detection, it is also surprisingly apt, offering some very literal and practical advice. Most classic coins display an ornamental border surrounding their rims, often consisting of beads or, more commonly, denticles — teeth-like protrusions that create the margin between the face ...
