2010 $50 American Gold Buffalo bullion coins debuted to roaring sales of 48,500 on their first day of issue, according to the United States Mint. The U.S. Mint on Tuesday told its authorized purchasers that the 24 karat gold coins would be released Thursday, April 29. Buyers were ready. Proof coins seem to be on the minds of more readers than usual this week. I had an e-mail from one who expressed surprise that the Mint did not sell rolls of proof cents that he had seen advertised. He sent me an e-mail in response to the poll question about whether he planned to buy the new two-roll set of Union Shield uncirculated cents for $8.95. Perhaps he has a point. The case of a Rochester man who pawned stolen coins from a collection worth $50,000 resulted in suspended prison time on Thursday. The Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office has identified two men wanted for questioning in connection with the theft of a valuable coin collection.
