Welcome back to Something About Coins! Here are some coin news from all over the internet.
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) announced they've authenticated a 2009 Taylor Presidential Dollar error coin. Its edge lettering clearly spelled 2010 instead of the correct 2009 year. NGC believes this type of error on the Taylor dollars will remain rare. Images were included in the post.
News10Now.com posted a video of the Millard Fillmore Presidential $1 coin launch in Moravia, NY. The ceremony was held in the Moravia school cafeteria and hundreds of people attended. According to the report, more showed up than expected.
Lincoln Coin and Chronicles sets are selling for $150 on eBay, CoinNews.net revealed. The special set was released by the US Mint in October 2009 for $55.95. One interesting tip was disclosed: Prices on Sundays averaged $10 lower, and Thursdays averaged the highest.
The Pasadena Star-News addressed the honest coin dealer search. The article recommended knowledgeable, stable, and respectable qualities in a dealer, and believed dealers belonging to the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) possess those qualities. Their web page offers a link to find a PNG dealer.
Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) web site discussed reasons why Franklin halves are valued differently among same dates and grades. Eye appeal and color-tone were explained.
Numismatic News covered Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo Seated Liberty exhibits. One display will have Seated Liberty halves, another the Top 100 Seated Liberty dimes, and yet another the PCGS # 1 set of Seated quarters. Competitions, activities, and show times were also mentioned in the article. The expo runs March 4-7.
Finally, not everybody is thrilled about the new penny design. FastCompany.com gave the US Mint and the new penny a bad review, saying the 2009 designs looked "cartoony" and the 2010 design was "simplistic and fake-looking."
