Welcome to Something About Coins! Here are a few coin articles on the web right now.
Bloomberg reported the Royal Mint doubled gold coin production last year. This follow-up report said 125,469 ounces were produced in 2009, compared to 46,315 ounces in 2008. For the U.S. Mint, it said gold American Eagle sales rose by 66% to 1.43 million ounces. As for the silver metal, the Royal Mint used 38% more than the previous year, which totaled 354,285 ounces in 2009.
SilverCoinsToday.com extracted the U.S. Mint's 2009 silver coin revenue from the recent Annual Report. One ounce silver American Eagle sales rose by 9 million more coins than FY 2008, reaching 28,766,500 sold, or $372 million in sales. Revenue for commemorative silver coins, however, dropped over $15 million, hitting just $21.6 million in 2009 compared to $37.3 million in 2008, according to the article.
Paul M. Green featured the nickel 3-Cent piece in his latest article on Numismatic News. He explained there were 25 dates in the set and three proof-only issues, they emerged during the Civil War, and there was some hoarding. He covered reasons for the coin's composition and size, and of course, provided a few mintage numbers and values in certain grades.
Stack's New York Americana sales results were announced over the weekend, and the press release stated they achieved $5 million in sales. The long article listed many of the rare coin sale prices. The Eliasberg 16 Stars 1797 half dime graded MS-66 by NGC reached $97,750, and an 1825 quarter eagle graded MS-66 by NGC sold for $115,000. Pictures were included in the press release.
Pictures are trickling in from the 39th World Money Fair in Berlin, and NGC posted theirs on their web site. The article said its grading service is growing quickly in Europe, and several dealers at the show offered NGC-certified coins.
John Feigenbaum also shared his pictures from Berlin on a blog for StellaCoinNews.com. In his report, he stated many coins at the show were cleaned and low-end compared to U.S. shows, but the Ancients category was the nicest area.
The upcoming Long Beach Coin Expo Official Program is online now. The show starts this Thursday, Feb. 4.
