Welcome to Something About Coins! Silver Eagles sold out, the coin index went down, and PCGS started a Million Dollar Club.
The 2009 American Silver Eagles sold out, according to a report on CoinNews.net. The Mint sold a record-breaking 29 million to authorized purchasers. The article said that the '09 figures would've been higher if the U.S. Mint had more silver coin blanks available to meet demand. Instead, the Mint had to suspend sales and ration them throughout the year. The Mint confirmed the 2010 bullion coins will still launch next Tuesday, Jan. 19th.
Steve Roach explained Coin World's Classic U.S. Rarities Key-Date Investment Index and why there was a 7.9% drop for 2009. The index consists of 82 coins, and copper coin values did much better than silver and gold coins, he reported. To learn how coins stacked up against other investment groups, he said to check out the 2009 scorecard in the Jan. 4 issue of the Wall Street Journal.
Doug Winter blogged about his observations at the 2010 FUN show. He said he sold about 20 coins above $10K but didn't buy any new ones in early gold or type one Liberty Head double eagles. He also thought Friday was much busier than Thursday, and a highlight for him was seeing Dale Friend's remarkable collection of superbly toned Bust half dollars at the PCGS table.
Colonel Steven Ellsworth, a coin security expert, listed 16 best secured coin shows of 2009 on NumismaticNews.com. The ANA National Money Show, FUN, and Long Beach Coin Expo all made it. The type of security for both dealers and the public was described for each show named.
On his web site, www.butternut.org, Ellsworth provides important security tips anyone can use to prevent a crime from happening to them, or at least reduce the opportunity. He has nine excellent pages detailing how to stay safe at shows, home, and while transporting valuables. On the home security page, he recommended using a post office box instead of your home address, having a dog plus an alarm system, and installing double-keyed double-sided dead bolts on the doors, to name a few.
A stunning 1796 Draped Bust quarter is one of the highlights in Ira and Larry Goldberg's Pre-Long Beach auction. The press release, published on CoinLink.com, said the small eagle quarter was graded MS-63 by NGC, it's richly toned, and the surfaces were uncommonly smooth. Adding to its uniqueness is the fact that it's a High 6 variety with no die cracks through LIBERTY. Its estimated value is between $80,000 and $90,000. The auction starts Jan 31 through Feb. 2.
Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) launched the Million Dollar Coin Club a few days ago. It is a free information tool about the coins that have sold at auction for $1 million or more. Right now, the club consists of 210 U.S. rare coins, and the club will be updated four times a year. Images, expert narratives, pedigrees and more are provided for each coin.
