Welcome to Something About Coins! A new coin emerges, advice for collectors abound, and highlights of upcoming auctions cannot be ignored!
The Royal Canadian Mint announced the release of Cindy Klassen's 25 cent coin in circulation. CoinNews.net shows the commemorative coin featuring an image of Klassen as she speed skates. She won an impressive five medals in the Turin Games in 2006 and is competing in the Vancouver 2010 Games next month. CoinNews reported the Klassen coin is the third part in the Vancouver 2010 collection, and sets with the first three coins are available through the Royal Canadian Mint.
Doug Winter wrote a wise article about how a collector should prepare for a coin show. He advised taking a good lamp, have a game plan, and buy coins you really want, to name a few. He also said that at FUN this week, you'll definitely want to check out the incredible auction lots.
The Muller 1927-D $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin is one of those lots. In fact, 59 of the Ralph P. Muller Collection of Saint-Gaudens will be for sale at the Heritage Auction during FUN, and CoinLink.com ran a description of the remarkable collection. In the article, some advice from Muller included taking your time for quality specimens to enter the market, make sure you don't overextend yourself financially, and don’t give up!
Before you go bidding on gold coins, you might want to read this article from Scott Barman about the gold composition of U.S. coins. He said coins struck between 1792 and 1834 were made of .9167 fine gold, and those struck between 1839 and 1933 were .9000 gold. He listed other time frames, coin denominations that belonged in each group, and the name of each congressional coin act that set the standards.
Another auction taking place this week is the 38th Annual New York International Numismatic Convention at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel from Thursday until Sunday. CoinLink.com published a press release from George Frederick Kolbe/Fine Numismatic Books that they will be auctioning key works from the Stack Family Numismatic Library. The article describes some of the highlights from that collection.
If you live in southeast Oklahoma, Gary Parsons wants to talk to you. An article on McAlesterNews.com said he's trying to start a coin collector's club in McAlester. The article profiles Parsons, who is the President of the Oklahoma Numismatic Association. The article states, "An organizational meeting of the future club is scheduled for Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. at the McAlester Public Library."
Finally, I want to mention the funny article about coin collecting from a non-collector's perspective at a money show. It was published on Christmas day, a slow day for coin news.
