Welcome to Something About Coins! Here are just a few new coin articles circulating the web today.
Today the U.S. Mint provided an update on 2009 Gold Eagle coins, CoinNews.net reported. U.S. Mint Director of Public Affairs, Tom Jurkowsky, said that more limited-quantity 2009 fractional sized bullion coins will be offered Monday, Dec. 14. After they're gone, he said, no more will be produced. The article went on to mention that more one ounce gold bullion eagles will be available on Tuesday, Dec. 15. Those eagles will be allocated "until at least the end of December 2009, on a weekly basis."
David Ganz reported another 1933 $20 Double Eagle case update. He said the government has now sued itself and Israel Switt, in an effort to get the Langbord family's ten double eagles declared as U.S. government property. Apparently the government entered Switt's affidavit as evidence that Switt allegedly lied about the coins. Part of the affidavit is quoted in the article.
Bowers & Merena published their upcoming 2010 Orlando Rarities Coin Auction highlights on CoinLink.com. Among those listed were the 1851 Augustus Humbert Fifty-Dollar gold error graded AU-55 by PCGS, a 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter graded MS-65 Full Head by NGC, and a 1796 Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar 16 stars variety graded VG-10 by PCGS and CAC Approved.
Last Wednesday, at the Northern Mariana Islands Quarter Ceremony, the U.S. Mint celebrated the newest quarter launch by handing out free quarters to children 18 and under. Other attendees exchanged currency for new $10 rolls. The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands commemorative quarter is the sixth and final coin in the 2009 D.C. & U.S. Territories Quarters Program.
