Welcome back to Something About Coins!
It hasn't quite been a week yet since the launch, and already the U.S. Mint's Platinum proof coins have almost sold out. CoinNews.net reported 7,207 of the allocated 8,000 maximum were sold by Sunday the 6th, per the latest U.S. Mint's sales figures. The coins cost $1,792 each and there's a household limit of five. The high demand can be explained by fact that there won't be any bullion, uncirculated, nor fractional versions, the article said.
The U.S. Mint unveiled the 2010 Presidential $1 coin designs in a press release today. The coins honor former Presidents Fillmore, Pierce, Buchanan and Lincoln. I'm guessing the Lincoln Presidential dollar will be a huge hit, but we'll have to wait until the end of 2010 for its release date.
Last week, NumisMaster.com published a list of six coin groups with potential growth. They're all silver and include four Morgan dollars, two Peace dollars, a Walking Liberty half dollar, a proof Franklin half, some Standing Liberty quarters, and surprisingly, proof Maria Theresa thalers.
Another article from last week announced Princeton acquired a 7th century Jesus coin. "It's a Byzantine gold coin from the seventh century with an image of Jesus Christ on its face, issued by Emperor Justinian II. It's the first known coin to have a Christ image, and it now has a new home in the Princeton University Numismatic Collection."
According to a recent press release, www.USChallengeCoins.com launched a free challenge coin trading section that allows visitors to exchange all kinds of challenge coins online. The site already sells various coins, patches and pins, but the trading section offers something new for enthusiasts from around the world to do.
Thanks for reading and see you tomorrow.
