Welcome to Something About Coins! Here are just a few of the many coin articles that circulated the web this past weekend and today.
According to a post from Key West, FL, there's a hidden $2,400 historic silver coin on the sunken Hoyt S. Vandenberg. Documentary filmmaker Pat Clyne hid a coin that was originally recovered from the 17th century Spanish galleon Atocha. The coin is in a black tin box with magnets, and Clyne posted clues on his You Tube channel for treasure hunters. Any diver who finds the coin can email Clyne, and he will send the diver the coin's certificate of authenticity.
If you like to hunt for error coins, Ken Potter posted a new article featuring a 1947-S Washington quarter error coin with evidence of trapped gas within the planchet. He described the magnitude of the error, as well as other error coins like a 1971-D Kennedy half dollar, Roosevelt dime, 1865 nickel 3-cent piece, 1999-D New Jersey state quarter, and a 1952 cent.
Steve Roach of Coin Values posted an observation of Bust dollars, or 1794-1803 Flowing Hair and Draped Bust silver dollars. He said there's a shortage of original state Bust dollars. Nicely graded Very Fine through About Uncirculated sell well, but Mint State is problematic. Counterfeited, tooled, and cleaned versions exist, as well as over graded ones too, he reported. Recently, no buyers wanted two Mint State Bust coins with questionable surfaces on auction by Bowers and Merena.
Counterfeit coins are a growing concern and a post from last week has reported many ways to determine a real or fake gold coin. In sum, the article discussed gold's physical properties. A few test methods in the article include visually inspecting the color, measuring the density, and listening to the sound of the coin when dropped on a hard surface.
NumisMaster reported the "finest known example" of the 1907 American Double Eagle was sold by Park Avenue Numismatics in Miami for more than $600,000. This coin was graded MS-69 by PCGS and has a "wire rim" that was the result from the seven strikes it took to create the high relief appearance.
There's only three days left to purchase the First Spouse Van Buren's Liberty Gold Coin from the U.S. Mint. It's a 2008 dated one-half ounce 24-karat gold coin in a $10 denomination. It comes in Proof or Uncirculated. The Mint is selling the Proof for $754.00 and the Uncirculated for $741.
Thanks for reading and see you tomorrow!
