A woman left $40,000 in rare coins at a Catholic shrine for safekeeping while she went out of town, reported the New York Times. The operators of the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes near Emmitsburg, MD found the coins and kept them in a safe. When the woman returned, she asked the Shrine Director for her coins. She told him she left the coins because she wanted the Blessed Mother to watch over them while she was away. He returned her coins then persuaded her to put them in a bank's safe deposit box.
Numismatters recently blogged about the beautiful Royal Spanish Mint's Jewels of Numismatics series. The three coins in the series are the silver 50 Reales coin mostly known as Cincuentín (2009 50€ Cincuentin Silver Proof), the gold 100 Escudos coin also known as Centén (2009 100€ Centen Gold-Plated Silver Proof), and a 20 euro gold proof honoring the Centen. Images of the coins show the impressive artwork.

The American Numismatic Association announced their theme for their next National Coin Week, April 18-24, 2010. It will be, “Beautiful Places: Landmarks and Mintmarks”, and clubs are invited to participate in a number of fun and educational events regarding geography on coins. The Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York is hosting the 38th Annual New York International Numismatic Convention for the public January 8-10, 2010, NumisMaster reported last week. A hundred world and ancient numismatics specialists will be on hand. Also, at least twelve different dealers will hold auctions between January 3-9, 2010.
