Welcome to Something About Coins! Here are a few short summaries of coin articles circulating the web:
Steve Roach of Coin Values reported some rarities at Stack's auction struggled. The auction took place in Baltimore, MD last week, and the highlight of the show, a 1907 UHR Double Eagle pattern coin in PR-58, didn't sell. Also in the article, an 1861 Confederate Cent owned by Q. David Bowers sold for $112,700, and a proof 1922 Peace dollar sold for $44,850.
The 2010 Coin of the Year Nominees have been announced by Krause Publications according to NumisMaster.com. All of the nominees are listed in the article. Canada had eight of their coins nominated, Austria had seven nominated, and three countries tied with five nominated coins. They are Poland, the Ukraine, and USA. Austria's silver Philharmonic, South Africa's gold Krugerrand, and USA's American Silver Eagle all made the list for Most Popular. One notable was the Hawaiian state quarter, because it has been nominated in the Best Trade Coin category. I'm sure I'll be writing about the Coin of the Year several more times before the winner is announced in January.
Bullion coins are selling like hot cakes right now, and CoinNews.net recently described American Silver Eagle prices on eBay. It said that 2009 "First Strike" MS-70 by PCGS silver eagles are commanding $250 premiums over silver on the auction site. The regular, I mean not the first, MS-70 silver eagles are selling with $60-$76 premiums, and the ungraded versions are going for about $3 to $5 over the London Fix price of silver on eBay.
The new Zachary Taylor Presidential $1 coin will launch this Thursday, Nov. 19. Taylor's coin is the 12th coin in the Presidential $1 series, and the fourth one for this year. Taylor was President for 16 months in 1849 & 1850.
Back on Nov. 5th, I summarized a blog about the rare 1884-CC Morgan in PR-66 by NGC that will be listed in the Heritage US Coin Auction, Dec. 3-6, in Houston, TX. In a press release by Heritage over the weekend, it's being named the highlight for the auction. Heritage also talked about other prized coins in the auction, like a 1925-D $20 Double Eagle in MS-65 by PCGS, a round and an octagonal 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 gold piece, and a 1795 $10 gold Eagle with 9 Leaves in XF by NGC.
Ken Potter wrote about a unique 2008-P Alaska quarter with die flow lines. The reverse die showed an "orange peel" surface and very dramatic die flow lines near the rims that could be easily seen with the naked eye. He believed the dark die flow lines were exaggerated by some kind of tarnished planchet or mystery material.
Finally, NewsandSentinel.com had a nice little write up about the Parkersburg Coin Show in Marietta, OH over the weekend. It explained coin values, gave advice to beginner collectors, and discussed the impact of gold prices.
Thank you for visiting! See you tomorrow!
