Welcome to Something About Coins! Popular topics on the web right now are Girl Scout Commemoratives, events at the Whitman Baltimore Expo in November, and the Buffalo Proof Coin launch.
There will be a Girl Scouts Commemorative Coin. President Obama signed the bill today, per CoinCollectingNews.org, and authorizes up to 350,000 silver dollar coins to be minted in 2013. The article did not mention, however, if those delicious Girl Scout Cookies will be featured on the coins. By the way, the U.S. Mint is making the Boy Scouts Commemorative coin in 2010.
In today's Buzz with Dave Harper, Harper talks about facts of a Confederate Cent that is being auctioned in the upcoming Stack's 74th Anniversary Sale scheduled for Nov. 9-11 in Baltimore, MD. To make the cent more interesting, it was owned by Q. David Bowers.
Something else happening in Baltimore, on Nov. 12 & 13, will be free NGC expert consultations at the Whitman Baltimore Expo. Mark Salzberg and David Camire will be at the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation booth at the Expo, and collectors can have up to three coins examined by the experts. Those interested in the free service should visit the booth early to reserve a place in line. The times and dates that have been allotted are posted in their press release at NGCcoin.com.
More information was reported this week about a counterfeits suspect in California who was selling fraudulently altered Morgan dollars. I mentioned this in an earlier blog. The dollars were cut in half and then attached to another tampered coin, to make rare date coins. Then the "new" coin was placed in a PCGS holder. The article reports, "Among the fraudulent alterations were "1883-S," "1884-S" and "1903-S" that were deceitfully labeled as PCGS MS65, MS63 and MS64, respectively." Detective Lorenzo Graham of the Alameda Police Department, at (510) 337-8388, is still investigating.
The other day, I told you that NumisMaster.com published an article citing various ways to acquire coins. One that was not mentioned was uncovering buried treasure from a field. A family discovered a bottle filled with silver and gold coins, including a Piece of Eight coin from Spain. Metal detecting is another way to find coins. It's very popular in England, and the Staffordshire Hoard, found in July, had more than 1,500 items of gold, silver, and precious stones.
Finally, the U.S. Mint launched the 2009 American Buffalo Gold Proof Coin today. The coin is one ounce of 24-karat gold and costs $1,360.00. It looks like the Mint's web site is doing fine today; no "downtime" like the launch of the Lincoln Coin & Chronicles Set.
That's it for now. Enjoy the weekend!
