Welcome back to Something About Coins!
There's a big 100-kg Maple Leaf gold coin in Toronto tonight. It was minted in 2007 and is currently on tour before its big auction in 2011, reports the Montreal Gazette. Its face value is $1 million but at current bullion prices, it's worth about $3.4 million U.S.
CoinLink published a press release announcing another auction that's just around the corner. Bowers & Merena's auction will take place during the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore, M.D. Viewing of lots will start Nov. 10 and the first day of auction will be the 12th. Over 6,000 lots will be available, the largest of the year for B&M, according to the announcement. The highlight is lot 3685, a rare 1830 BD-1 Half Eagle in MS-65. Other special U.S. and world coins are listed.
Speaking of world coins, a couple of days ago Richard Giedroyc wrote about China's internal battle with counterfeiters. He described two big coin busts in China's central region from this summer. The article said police found 200,000 counterfeit 1-yuan coins in a suspect's home in Guangzhou, and in another case police arrested more than 20 people possessing 1.17 million counterfeit 1-yuan coins.
There's a new video web site for coins, at www.CoinsTV.com, reports Numismaster.com. It's a joint project between Michael Zielinski and Mark Apsolon. So far eight videos are available, and the most recent covers the Presidential $1 coin series.
WDW uses Native American $1 coins instead of dollar bills now at several locations throughout two of its parks, CoinNews reported. The point behind this project was to become more environmentally responsible, the article revealed. Perhaps Disney can make the Mint's dream come true.
