Welcome back to Something About Coins! The internet is popping with coin articles. The U.S. Mint finally makes an announcement about the last Lincoln Set, Numismaster.com suggests three-cent pieces, and new facts surface about Gobrecht dollars. Check it out!
Lincoln products have been hot all year, and there's no doubt the The Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set will go like fire, because only 50,000 will be available. CoinNews.net reveals the U.S. Mint will launch Coin & Chronicles on October 15 at noon ET.
Also October 15 is the Daniel Frank Sedwick 6th Treasure Auction. It is being divided into three sessions spanning two days, according to a press release. World coins, shipwreck artifacts, and more will be auctioned. The announcement encourages bids via www.iCollector.com/sedwick.
In an article today on Numismaster.com, low-mintage dates make the U.S. Nickel Three-Cent Pieces an attractive series to collect, explains Mike Thorne. He presents facts to prove it may be a bit of a challenge but also notes coin values for various dates and grades, demonstrating it is a series currently experiencing low demand. These colonial coins began in 1865 and ended in 1890, Thorne states as he covers much of the coin's history and ways to you can collect, such as proof versions or varieties.
Gobrecht Dollars, coined before the Civil War and known for their alignment of the eagle, were an interesting series, reported R.W. Julian of Numismatic News over the weekend. Whether Gobrecht dollars were restrikes or originals was revisited, as well as ways to distinguish the two varieties. Then, the story got better. New documentation was revealed, and Julian described it in detail - twenty paragraphs worth - before the summary.
Now, I'm going to go back to new coins. Debbie Bradley, on Numismatic News, described the America the Beautiful quarters' designs that were presented to the Commission of Fine Arts and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. Images of the artwork for the first five quarters is posted, giving readers an idea of what to expect when the quarters launch next year.
Speaking of quarters, U.S. Virgin Islands Quarters launches today from the U.S. Mint, notes WorldMintCoins.com. The Virgin Islands quarter is the fifth quarter in the D.C. & U.S. Territories Quarter Program.
Finally, I mentioned this before but just as a reminder, the 2009 United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Set launches this week on Thursday.
Thanks for reading! See you tomorrow!
