Welcome back to Something About Coins! Q. David Bowers was in the news twice this week, Kathleen Duncan shares tips for collecting rare coins, and the Royal Mint announces a new silver proof set.
Today, Q. David Bowers was on television promoting the Whitman Coin Expo in Philadelphia. CoinNews.net posted the five minute video of Bowers quoting values of coins and explaining three amazing exhibits. Earlier in the week, CoinLink.com reported that David Sklow will auction Bowers' numismatic library in 2010. Since there are thousands of volumes in Bowers' vast collection of source material, the consignment is divided into thirds. Parts will sell in February, June, and October, 2010.
Kathleen Duncan, of Pinnacle Rarities, discusses collector sets in the Classic Silver Commemorative category. The coin sets include mostly half dollars, minted between 1892 and 1954. According to the article, the category consists of 144 different silver coins, so she breaks it down into manageable type sets of 4 to 18 coins each. She describes several specialty sets, civil war issues, California issues, art deco issues, and New York issues.
If you like British collections, you should check out the new UK 50p Silver Proof Collection. The Royal Mint is celebrating 40 years of the 50p piece, and to commemorate the anniversary, they're making a 16-coin silver proof set. Each seven-sided coin will feature a distinctive design that has appeared on the reverse of the 50p coin over the years. The press release that is linked provides specs for the proof set.
Finally, I just want to remind you the U.S. Mint will launch another new quarter Monday. The U.S. Virgin Islands Quarter is the fifth coin in the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program.
Thanks for reading! Have a great weekend and see you Monday!
