Welcome back to Something About Coins! I hope you like the site's new look! Today I found a few recent news articles about rare coins, particularly Liberty Heads. Check them out!
Over the weekend, Doug Winter of Rare Gold Coins talked about recent lower values of rare gold coins and explained why compressed values have happened. His focus was on various grades and values of rare Liberty Head gold coins. Among several mentioned factors, he said there are three kinds of buyers in the rare date gold market.
He said the segment of serious hard-core collectors on a budget is as strong as ever, the uninformed deal hunter segment who typically buy substandard or over graded coins is extremely weak, and the high budget connoisseur who search for the finest known coin is not as strong as it has been.
Speaking of Liberty Heads, Paul M. Green of Numismatic News writes about the 1894-S Gold Eagle for Numismaster.com today. In his article, he evaluates scarcity factors of the 1894-S. He looks at mintage, historical economic times, exports to Europe, and the 1933 Gold Recall Order. It's no wonder that only a few high grades managed to survive, but exactly how they survived is a wonder.
Changing subjects, World Coin News reports PNG (Professional Numismatists Guild) continues to fund IAPN (International Association of Professional Numismatists) for lobbying efforts to oppose unfair import restrictions on coins. I had to bring this up because it's an interesting article. It contains descriptions such as overzealous Customs Bureau agents, an archaeological community with an axe to grind, and the suggestion that Customs officials aren't doing enough to stop counterfeit coin importation from China. For more information on import restrictions in recent news, check out this press release about ACCG's (Ancient Coin Collectors Guild) fight seized ancient coins.
