Welcome back to Something About Coins!
Last month I told you about one of Britain's largest Viking treasures. I said it would go on display this month at two England museums. The latest update from BBC News says part of the treasure's display begins today in York at the Yorkshire Museum and will run until November 1st. Then the display will move to the British Museum, possibly until mid 2010, at which point it will return to York. By that time the rest of the treasure should be ready for display, all 617 ancient coins, as stated in the article.
I may not have any ancient or pristine rare coins in my collection yet, so I'm happy to learn PCGS created an "Everyman" Collection category in their PCGS Set Registry. If I want to register part of my collection, then according to their article, my set might show up on the first page of the Everyman Collection category instead of on the fourth page of a normal category. The only catch is no coins can have grades more than AU58 in this category. Still, the Everyman category allows many more collectors a chance to enjoy some competition, kind of like the wealthy collectors enjoy. I like it.
Speaking of competition and wealthy collections, one of the greatest Stack's Auctions is coming next week, according to an article posted on CoinLink.com. The Stacks Auction at the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Philadelphia Expo on September 23 & 24th will feature many rare colonial coins. The final sentences of the article from Stack's say, "This is one of the most interesting, most important auctions Stack’s has ever conducted. Many things are rare or in some instances, absolutely unique."
Finally, I'll close my blog by mentioning a modern coin. Numismaster posted an article earlier this week containing several reasons to collect the Jefferson nickels. It points out scarce dates, grades, and some notable errors.
Good night, and I'll see you tomorrow!
